Must Read Books

Here are some books that made a significant contribution to my thought processes.

Freakonomics
Recommended not because of the individual topics, but because it can start you down the path of thinking differently about things that might seem “obvious”.
Thinking, Fast and Slow
If you only read one book from this list, read this one. Explains how every single rational thought you have originates from an irrational “lizard brain”. And how only effort and discipline allows you to have rational thoughts.
The Theory That Would Not Die
Good lesson in how smart people can still be petty, vindictive and spiteful, and squash ways of thinking and results that they just don’t like. Along the way it explains part of the reason for this round of machine learning excitement (Bayes Rule).
The Book of Why
My paraphrase: “Knowledge is power, but counterfactuals rule the world.” Or this: “Counterfactuals are more important than data“. Or this: “Bias does not imply discrimination“.
